Masters of the Bench

Lord Guthrie was Chief of the Defence Staff 1997-2001, and Chief of the General Staff between 1994 and 1997.  Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, he was commissioned into the Welsh Guards in 1959.  Between 1966 and 1977 he served in the Special Air Service Regiment before returning to the Welsh Guards as Commanding Officer of 1 Battalion.  He is a non-executive director of N M Rothschild & Sons, and Colt Defense LLC.  He is Colonel Commandant of the SAS and Colonel of the Life Guards, as well as president of several charities, including Action Medical Research, the Army Benevolent Fund, and the Federation of London Youth Clubs.
