Hong Kong Scholarship

This scholarship is on hold and is not currently accepting applications.

Thanks to the generosity of John Scott SC, a member of the Inn, we are delighted to be able to offer this international scholarship, which covers;

  • a return economy flight;
  • a stay of three weeks in Hong Kong, with one week's work experience in Des Voeux Chambers, one week's marshalling, and possibly one week's work experience in an international law firm;
  • accommodation

The scholarship is aimed at applicants who would like to practise commercial law and have a particular interest in international commercial law. It is open to applicants before, during or after pupillage. They must be members of the Inn and have successfully completed the Bar Course at the time of commencing the scholarship. The placement will typically take place in September though for the exact timing of the stay in Hong Kong the successful candidate will liaise with Mr Scott directly.

In making its selection, the interviewing panel will consider candidates' merit according to the criteria which apply to all the Inn’s scholarships, namely academic ability, motivation to succeed at the Bar, potential as an advocate, personal qualities such as self-reliance, independence, integrity, reliability, and the capacity to work effectively with clients, colleagues and chambers staff, as well as their interest in international commercial law.   It is also important that the successful candidate is a good ambassador for both the Middle Temple and the Bar of England and Wales.

Priority may be given to suitable candidates who have not previously benefited from other equivalent awards.  The selection panel will, if it thinks fit, create a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed.

At the conclusion of the scholarship, a report to the Inn of the time spent in Hong Kong should be submitted to the Scholarships Officer.
