Masters of the Bench

Bernard has been Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Mauritius since 2007.  In June 2007 he was elected to a six-year term as Commissioner, African Commission on Human Rights & People's Rights.  He studied law at Leeds and was Called to the Bar by Lincoln's Inn in 1970.  He started his career as State Counsel at the Attorney-General's Office and became Magistrate in 1976.  From 1984 to 1989, he served as Master and Registrar and Judge in Bankruptcy.  In 1989, he was appointed Supreme Court Judge and in 1995 he became Senior Puisne Judge.  He is also a Bencher of Lincoln's Inn.
