(Tony) Smith has recently stepped down as Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Law Faculty at Victoria University of Wellington. He is a Professor of Law at that university, and the Arthur Goodhart Professor at Cambridge 2015-2016. He is a Barrister of the New Zealand High Court, a Barrister and Honorary Bencher of the Middle Temple and a member of the Media Law set, 5 Raymond Buildings. His books include (with Sir David Eady), Arlidge, Eady and Smith On Contempt (4th ed 2011) in the Common Law Library Series and Glanville Williams, Learning the Law (14th ed 2013), and with A.P. Simester ed, Harm and Culpability (1996). A New Zealander by origin (LL.M., 1st, Canterbury 1972), he has spent much of his academic career in England, latterly at Cambridge, from which university he holds the LL.D. degree, where he was the Professor of Criminal and Public Laws and Chairman of the Faculty. He is a Life Fellow of Gonville and Caius College. Prior to Cambridge, he was a Reader at the University of Durham (and Dean) and Professor at the University of Reading (and Dean equivalent there). He was Chair of the Committee of UK Heads of University Law Schools. He has held visiting Professorships at the University of Iowa, Northwestern, Paris II (at the Institute de Droit Comparé), City University (London) Auckland and Otago. |
