Masters of the Bench

Samantha Sacramento read her law degree and LLM at Cardiff University.  She was called to the Bar of England & Wales and started her career at the Commission for Racial Equality in Cardiff.  In 2004, she returned to Gibraltar and undertook private practice until her election to the Gibraltar Parliament in 2011 and appointment as a Cabinet Minister of Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar.

Samantha is Gibraltar’s first Minister for Equality and the first woman to act as Chief Minister of Gibraltar.  In addition to her notable work on women’s rights, domestic abuse and rights of people with disabilities, she has also progressed LGBT rights in Gibraltar, having introduced Civil Partnerships for all in 2014 and in 2016 legislating to allow for same sex marriage. 

In October 2019, Samantha became Gibraltar’s Minister for Justice and Minister for civil contingencies. She has chaired Gibraltar’s Civil Contingencies Strategic Co-ordinating Group throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. In August 2020, she was also additionally appointed Minister for Health and Care. 

Samantha is the head of delegation for the Gibraltar Parliament for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and is currently the Chair of the CPA British Islands and Mediterranean Region Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians.
