Masters of the Bench

After studying law at Cambridge and qualifying as a barrister 1980, Sir Mark joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1980.  Sir Mark has been the British Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) since November 2009.  He has held such posts as the Director General for Political Affairs (2007-2009); High Commissioner to Pakistan (2003-2006); FCO Director, Africa (2000-2003); Deputy High Commissioner and Consul General, South Africa (1996-1998); First Secretary, Paris (1990-1993) and Second Secretary, Islamabad (1982-1985).  His wife, Sheila, is also a member of the FCO Diplomatic Service.  His interests include golf, tennis and bridge.
