He also sits as an arbitrator. After reading law at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and driving HGVs to fund his time in pupillage, he was called to the Bar in 1977 and took silk in 2000. Having started practice in general common law on the Western Circuit, he developed a specialist practice centring on disputes related to construction. He is an advocacy trainer for the Inn and the Western Circuit, and has been a sponsor in the Inn for many years. As a member of the Bar Standards Board Standards Committee between 2012 and 2015, he contributed towards the new Handbook and Code of Conduct issued in 2014. He is married with two sons and lives in south London. His interests outside law include travel, sailing, architecture, theatre, and opera.
