He was educated at Pontypridd Boys’ Grammar School and Downing College, Cambridge and was a Fellow of Downing College from 1975 to 1991. He was a Junior Crown Counsel (Common Law) from 1997 to 1999 when he was appointed Queen’s Counsel. He was appointed a High Court Judge of the Queen’s Bench Division in October 2005. From 2008 to 2011 he was a Presiding Judge of Wales and Chair of the Lord Chancellor’s Standing Committee on the Welsh Language. In 2012 he was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal and was Chairman of the Law Commission from 2012 to 2015. In 2017 he was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court. On 17 August 2022, it was announced that he had been reappointed to the Supreme Court. |
