She was called to the Bar in 1988 and began practising on the Northern Circuit specialising in Crime. She started out in King Street West Chambers, then moved to Peel Court and finally to Exchange Chambers. Her cases were dominated by those involving vulnerable witnesses and defendants. She was a member of Chambers Equality and Diversity Committee and has a deep-seated interest in fairness and equality, and is particularly interested in promoting equal opportunities for women. She is a member of Women in Law which encourages women to consider judicial careers and mentors younger women through career progression. She was independent legal advisor to the Hate Crime Scrutiny panels in Yorkshire, working with community representatives to improve prosecution of such offences. She has spoken at conferences on Honour Based Violence and Forced Marriage. She was appointed Recorder in 2009 and to the circuit bench in 2015. She is married to an artist and has two grown up children. |
