Masters of the Bench

Philip was in practice at 9-12 Bell Yard (now Foundry Chambers) from pupillage to his tenure as Head of Chambers from 2008 – 2011. He appeared in major criminal trials for the Prosecution and Defence. Educated at Roundhay Grammar School, Leeds and University College, Oxford (1971-4), he was called to the Bar in 1976, was appointed a Recorder in 2000 and took silk the same year. He was appointed a Circuit Judge in 2014 and a permanent judge at the Central Criminal Court in 2017. Philip teaches professional ethics in the NPP programme and chairs moots.
