This year, we mark 250 years since the Declaration of American Independence on 4 July 1776. Members of the Middle Temple played a significant role in this historic event and in the years which surrounded it, but the Inn’s American connections predate this by many centuries and endure to this day.
Join us in the Library to hear members of the Inn perform readings from material held within the Inn’s collections and from letters written by Middle Templars involved in the American Revolution, selected and introduced by the Master of the Archive, Master Patric Dickinson.
There will also be an opportunity, over drinks, to view the exhibition, London, Law & Liberty? Middle Temple and the USA: 250 Years of Independence, which explores the Inn’s long and often complex relationship with the United States, from the pivotal moment of Magna Carta to the intertwined histories of empire, education, revolution and the ongoing importance of the Library’s US collection.
Please note: This exhibition includes material relating to colonialism, enslavement and violence against Indigenous communities. While outmoded terminology and images appear, these are presented to support critical engagement with the historical record and do not reflect contemporary usages, opinion or values.
