Event Details

Join us as Professor Philippe Sands KC reads from his newest book, 38 Londres Street: On Impunity, Pinochet in England, and a Nazi in Patagonia. Refreshments will be provided.

Philippe Sands is Professor of Law at University College London and a practising barrister at 11KBW Chambers, specialising in international law. He has appeared before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the International Criminal Court, the European Court of Human Rights, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. He is the author of East West Street (2016) and The Ratline (2020), in addition to several academic texts.

His most recent book, 38 Londres Street: On Impunity, Pinochet in England, and a Nazi in Patagonia, weaves together the 1998 arrest in London of Augusto Pinochet, former President of Chile, on charges of crimes against humanity, and the story of former SS officer Walther Rauff, who resided in Chilean Patagonia. The book details the disturbing link between the two men and the atrocities they committed, while exploring the limits of impunity.
