Bio:

Stuart was called in 1992 and had a traditional common law pupillage at 36 Bedford Row. He stayed as a tenant, with a mix of criminal, family and civil work. In 2001, he left to become a United Nations’ Prosecutor, posted to East Timor, returning to chambers two years later, with a mix of national and international criminal work. In 2005, he became Legal Advisor to the judges trying Saddam Hussein in Iraq. In 2009, he was appointed as a Special Advocate of the Attorney General, to do UK national security work. In 2012, he left chambers again, to become Head of Fraud at the Serious Fraud Office, leading the post-financial crisis investigations, and took silk in 2014. In 2016, he returned to private practice, now at an international law firm, becoming a partner at Latham & Watkins, and then Paul Hastings, doing a mix of financial crime and commercial litigation. Aside from practice, he was Chair of the War Crimes Committee of the International Bar Association, elected to the Bar Council, and was Chair of its Employed Bar Committee in 2023. He is currently a member of Middle Temple’s Membership Committee and Chair of the Employed Bar Society.
