Bio:

Born in Stirling. Educated at Edinburgh University (LLB), Hertford College, Oxford (BCL), Harvard Law School (LLM). Admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1984. First recipient of the Lord Reid scholarship (1983-85). Standing junior counsel to the Ministry of Defence (Army) 1990 -1991, standing junior counsel to the Scottish Office Industry Department 1992 -1997. Clerk of the Faculty of Advocates 1990 -1995. Took silk 1997. An Advocate depute (prosecuting counsel) 1998-2001. At the Bar predominantly civil practice, emphases on commercial law, property law, public law, valuation for rating. Appointed a Judge of the Court of Session and High Court of Justiciary 2010. Judge of Lands Valuation Appeal Court 2011 to date. 2014 -2020 commercial, insolvency, intellectual property and arbitration judge, and the exchequer judge. 2018-2020 Principal Commercial Judge. 2013-2020 Upper Tribunal (Tax and Chancery). 2015-2020 Competition Appeal Tribunal. 2020 to date Inner House Judge. Editor of Armour, Valuation for Rating.
