In 2021, Cornerstone Barristers and four other planning, property and public law sets (Field Court Chambers, Francis Taylor Building, Kings Chambers, and Landmark Chambers), set up a mentoring scheme for underrepresented groups at the Bar. Falcon Chambers, 39 Essex Chambers, No 5 Chambers and Gatehouse Chambers have since joined the scheme. It is supported by the Planning and Environment Bar Association (PEBA).

The scheme is intended to encourage undergraduates and postgraduates from groups that are not well represented at the Bar to consider becoming barristers. These underrepresented groups include women, people from minority ethnic backgrounds and people from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

The Bar should be open to all who have the requisite ability, and we hope that the mentoring scheme will help talented individuals who might not think the Bar is for them to understand what the Bar has to offer and how to become a barrister, and to assist in the application process.

Successful applicants will be offered one-to-one meetings with a mentor, a workshop on applications for pupillage and one or more social events with mentors and other mentees.

Young Bar Mentoring is a mentoring scheme for aspiring barristers. We match mentees with mentors who have recently been successful in the Inns of Court scholarship and/or pupillage application process.

We set up this mentoring scheme three years ago because we believe that the best advice scholarship/pupillage applicants can get is from those who have just gone through the process (and succeeded!) We realised that no current mentor scheme is run exclusively by recently successful applicants. Our reasoning for seeking recent applicants as our mentors is because the application process is constantly changing (particularly through the Pupillage Gateway) and our advice needs to be up-to-date.

Young Bar Mentoring has opened sign-ups for our mentoring scheme for the 2024-25 application cycle. We are recruiting for both mentees and mentors and our first deadline is fast approaching (15 November). We are in particular need of more mentors.
 
Mentees: 
 Mentees must be applying for pupillage or an Inns of Court Bar or GDL scholarship in this application cycle to sign up.
